Culture: The Heart of TICO
Preserving Heritage, Building Identity. At TICO, we believe that successful integration into Canada begins with a strong sense of identity. Our culture is rooted in Oromummaa—the shared identity and values of the Oromo people.
- The Gadaa System: We educate our youth on this ancient democratic system of governance, focusing on its principles of social justice, women’s rights, and community responsibility.
- Cultural Seminars: We host regular workshops on Afaan Oromo language and Tuulamaa history to ensure our heritage thrives in a multicultural Canadian landscape.
The Native Tuulamaa Oromos celebrate various indigenous cultures and significant holidays, including Irrechaa Malkaa and Irrechaa Gooroo. The Goobee players honor the household head and bless family members, focusing on land, property, and the family’s well-being. Cultural sports like QILLE, a ground hockey championship for adult males, are prominent. During Girls’ Day, Qaammee singers visit homes with fresh grass, bringing joy and blessings to families.
