Our Journey
TICO Founded in Calgary in 2023, TICO was born from a need to bridge the gap between the Tuulamaa Oromo heritage and the Canadian dream. We began as a grassroots gathering of families and have evolved into a structured organization dedicated to systemic change. Today, we serve as a vital link for the African diaspora, ensuring that no newcomer has to navigate their new home in isolation.
Our journey is one of resilience and determination, fueled by the collective spirit of our community. From the very first meetings in living rooms to our current standing as a recognized non-profit, every step has been built on the foundation of unity and shared purpose. We’ve grown through collaboration, drawing strength from each individual’s story and aspirations.
Our initiatives have expanded beyond borders, embracing the challenges and opportunities that come with cultural integration. We honor our roots while actively participating in the broader Canadian society, advocating for social justice and inclusivity. This dual focus empowers us to address pressing issues both locally and internationally, creating a network of support that transcends geographical boundaries.
Looking ahead, TICO is committed to continuing this legacy of empowerment and transformation. We strive to innovate and adapt, ensuring that our programs meet the evolving needs of our community. By fostering partnerships and leveraging technology, we aim to extend our reach and enhance our impact. Together, we are not just preserving heritage; we are building a future where the Tuulamaa Oromo community can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the world.
TICO was founded on the belief that strong communities are built on connection. While our roots are in the indigenous Tuulamaa Oromo heritage, our branches extend deep into Canadian soil. We recognize the challenges faced by newcomer families and marginalized groups in Calgary. We exist to close the gap between isolation and integration, serving as a hub for community empowerment.
At TICO, we’re driven by a powerful belief: education and awareness are catalysts for change. Our workshops and training sessions aren’t just about imparting knowledge; they’re about shaping leaders. Leaders who can stand up for their rights and skillfully navigate the labyrinth of modern society. But our mission goes beyond leadership. We’re also guardians of the rich cultural heritage of the Tuulamaa Oromo. Our programs are designed to keep this vibrant tapestry of traditions alive, ensuring future generations remain deeply connected to their roots while fearlessly reaching for the stars.
We’re not just building a community; we’re building bridges. By fostering dialogue and understanding, we’re knitting together diverse communities, sowing seeds of peace and cooperation.
TICO isn’t a solitary entity. We’re part of a global network, collaborating with international partners to amplify our impact. We draw on a wealth of global expertise and resources, fuelling our sustainable development initiatives.
Together, we’re not just dreaming of a future where the Tuulamaa Oromo people can thrive. We’re actively creating it. A future where dignity and equality aren’t just ideals, but realities. A world that doesn’t just recognize the unique identity and contributions of the Tuulamaa Oromo people, but celebrates them.: Background
